  • The Bright Band in Cuba

    I got this image one May 1st. May 1st,  2003, with Casablanca Radar, in Havana. It was an unusual late cold front. Some years later, my friend Daniel Ernesto commented that he got very wet  being at Plaza de la Revolución during the May 1st demostration. Bueno, para mis lectores hispano parlantes: este post va en inglés, porque se trata de un fenómeno de radar raro en Cuba, más propio de latitudes angloparlantes. Si se imaginaron que era sobre una banda de rock que va a visitar Cuba, se embarcaron. Well, frequently, I use this singular image in my conferences about Radar Meteorology. My friend Rinehart liked it so much that he used it as back cover for his book Radar for Meteorologists in its Spanish version.

  • Inglaterra: satisfacciones

    Dicen que a la tercera va la vencida. Había pasado yo dos veces por Londres y… directo del aeropuerto a la estación de trenes que está ahi mismo, y de ahí para Exeter…nada del Gran Londres. Esta vez sí que se me dió. Al retorno llegué a Londres (al hotel Hilton anexo al aeropuerto de Gatwick) a las 5 PM. En la Carpeta misma del Hilton Gatwick, la carpetera Marga, muy sagazmente se dio cuenta que yo hablaba español (conste que no fue por mi buen inglés sino por mi pasaporte que me delató), y ahí mismo le pregunté cómo podía llegar hasta Londres y sobre todo cuánto cuesta. Me explicó y me dijo que alrededor de 15 libras. La libra esterlina es un poco más cara que la libra de bistec de cerdo en el mercado, para que mis lectores cubanos tengan una idea del sacrificio que me aprestaba a hacer.
